Some of you know, some of you don’t. I’ve been in the Internet business since 1994. Did you know when the www aka “World Wide Web” protocol was implemented? 1994. Yep, I am one of the pioneers of the Internet. That’s before what was to come, A Real Business Website with WordPress, WordPress dominates as 30% of ALL Websites.
The changes have of course been enormous. Back then, websites were a bit more complicated to build. Not so much now, however even though there are MUCH easier ways to build a very attractive website with no technical knowledge, many businesses who are doing so do not realize the negative implications of doing so. I’m referring to of course using one of the easy to use page builders now available. Wix, Weebly, Squarespace, GoDaddy’s PageBuilder, etc. Though they make it easy to build a great looking website, here’s what they don’t want you to know that you need to. First thing you need, A Real Business Website with WordPress, WordPress dominates as 30% of ALL Websites. The website’s built on those platforms really can not be considered professional. Why not? The structure used for building with those platforms is not in accordance with the structure Google needs (Or any other search engine for that matter) to effectively read, index and rank your website.

For one, when you have a website, it’s usually assumed you want to be found in Google easily. Or at least relatively easily. Those platforms were designed to make it easy to build an attractive website using “Drag & Drop” tools. This method inherently produces results that make your website difficult for Google to effectively index. You see, Google’s spiders are programs. All search engines use these programs to crawl/read your website. If they can not read it, they can’t effectively index it let alone get it ranked. I was reminded recently of something I’ve since forgotten. When you go from page to page with these sites, the pages ALL have the same URL, your-websitename.com. No matter what page you go to, that is the same. each page does not have it’s own address like; your-websitename.com/product-page, your-websitename.com/about-us, etc. There is a reason to name the page according to what the content is. That is, for search engines to index and rank it accordingly. Without that happening, it pretty much obliterates any reasonable SEO for visitors to find you by. Now these platforms supposedly provide a work around for this issue though with Google looking for a particular structure with not only each page, also the web address, known as the URL, this “your-websitename.com/product-page” where the page will NOT have it’s own Address. So I’m saying, effective tactics that Google utilizes is pretty much ruined. Anything to overcome that is merely a bandaid. You know what a bandaid is, it’s a “Work around” that does not work well. What is really necessary is A Real Business Website with WordPress, WordPress dominates as 30% of ALL Websites.
There are two terms for SEO, one is called Black Hat, could be also called “The Dark Side” and one is called White Hat. Black Hat is where methods are used to “Trick” Google into seeing what is desired. White Hat is to actually follow Google’s rules. Black Hat can work for a while. Eventually though, the Google algorithms will be improved to recognize these “illegal” tactics. They will not only stop working, your website may also be penalized as well. This of course would defeat the whole purpose of why you have website is there to be online to begin with.
The best way for ALL businesses to address having a website is to do it the right way to begin with. What way is that? What is the best platform to use for your website that is so far ahead of everything else out there, nothing else even comes close? in one word, WordPress. I was afraid of that horrible word (WordPress) about to be used!
I understand that, I really do. When I first began using it the first time, I wasn’t crazy about it either. I had been doing all the websites I was doing using straight HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language). Back then I was using the well known development tool called DreamWeaver. When I first began using WordPress, it was a challenge because it totally changed the paradigm I was using. The reason I did so was I saw the need for doing this way. I realized the huge benefits that WordPress had for it that couldn’t happen anywhere near as well as continuing the way I was. I realized that once I get a handle on more effectively using WordPress, it would make my work much easier with the ability to be more flexible with design AND implement much more functionality than I could easily do the previous way. Ironically, many webmasters at the time didn’t want their clients to even know abut WordPress. Why? Because they saw it taking away the ability of the client to make changes on their own without knowing HTML. Interestingly, though I got that, I saw it as an opportunity to do much better things that I could charge more for than simple edits or adding on new pages. Though you know what? That didn’t really happen. For the most part, even though my clients COULD make their own changes, they usually preferred me to do it and still do in most cases. One of the other things I liked about WordPress is it’s use of Themes and/or Templates for the look and feel of the website. This makes it easy to give the site a very different look without having to redesign it. Actually it would be redesigned, though with much greater ease. The really neat thing about themes or templates is thy can be easily switched with a few clicks.
Now I also mentioned about SEO. That’s one of the greatest strengths of WordPress. In fact, WordPress was basically written from the beginning to be search engine friendly. More specifically Google friendly. Not sure if you know that WordPress was originally a Blogging software, not necessarily and Website Platform. Though there wasn’t much needed to advance it from a blogging platform to a website platform. The point is, it is really the best platform for SEO in the industry. Now that being said. With WordPress now being the MOST popular website platform on the planet, it sort of levels the playing field for getting the best SEO. With that being the case, it needs a little umph to standout above all the other WordPress websites out there. So to do that a plugin is necessary. An SEO plugin. Although there are several, the recommended one is Yoast. The reason being it IS the best in the industry. It is the only one that has a built in page editor guide. This is the only one I use for all the websites I build. soon
One of the misconceptions that seems to be out there is that you should first build your entire website before staring your SEO. I say, ridiculous! Good SEO can take time, a lot of time, depending on it’s key words, how competitive they are etc. There are a couple approaches I have to improve on that.
1) Weather I have the decided on design or not, I come up with initial content for the home page. Doesn’t have to be the final, a first draft is fine as long as it’s relative well written. More pages could and should be done as well.
2) Create the Google account for it and Webmaster Tools, now called Google Console. This where the website is first implemented and verified in Google. There are several was to verify ad as many as possible of them should be used. As Google says, the more, the better.
3) Once the domain is verified with at least 1 method, I have it crawl the first page, then request indexing of it. When doing the crawl I select to have the page rendered as well. Then I go ahead and do the same for the rest.
4) When in Google Console I grab the code for the domain, go into the Yoast setup in WordPress and paste it in the Google field for that.
That being done, I proceed to using to using the page editor in Yoast which evaluates for the criteria necessary to not only get the best indexing, also the best ranking for the key words/ key phrase necessary. One thing to keep in mind is each page is to focus on one keyword phrase. That’s another reason for use of the page builders mentioned interfere with this criteria. Though this has already been mentioned, it bears repeating, each page having it’s own distinctive page name, it’s actual title as well as it’s address.
