WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

I've seen many articles and videos supposedly explaining the difference between WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org. I'd have to say that many, perhaps most do a terrible job.

First of all they are both referred to as a platform. That's incorrect.

WordPress.com

WordPress.com is a platform.

WordPress.org

WordPress.org is a resource.

WordPress.com you have your website on.

WordPress.org, as a resource, gives you access to the WordPress application software and a gazillion plugins.

You don't have a domain on the free version. It's the-name-of-your-website.wordpress.com. You can register a domain to have it on, that makes it a paid version.

You register a domain and point it to the server you'll use. I recommend NameCheap.com. In my professional opinion being in the business since 1994. They are the best.

You have 118 free themes to choose from. 199 premium themes ranging from $39 to $175.

You have thousands of themes to choose from, many free, many are premium.

You cannot use plugins.

Thousands of plugins for cosmetics, functions,  page builders, colors, fonts, social media, security, backups and much more.

The content is not yours, it becomes theirs. It can  be closed at anytime. If you publish something they don't like, they can shut you down.

Your content is yours. Your are responsible though to maintain your hosting and do what you need to prevent hacking.

Selling of anything is limited. Ads are limited.

You can sell anything you want. E-commerce plugins are available for online payment. You can advertise anything you want.

Hopefully this has helped YOUR understanding of the WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org confusion? Would love your response below. Here are some links with more info. The point of this post is to clear up the biggest confusion of these two WordPress resources.

Moving a WordPress Website to GoDaddy

Moving a WordPress Website to GoDaddy

WordPress on GoDaddyLet me preface this to say that I’ve never been a fan of GoDaddy. That is to say, since I’m a webmaster since 1994, I like working with professional hosting and domain registrars. I find GoDaddy fine for personal websites, though in doing for a business, I do not find them the best choice. So moving a WordPress Website to GoDaddy was not my choice. It was the client’s.

I recently started a new website for a past client using WordPress as I do for all my clients. In checking on the domain the client already registered with GoDaddy, the client discovered they liked the price of their hosting compared to what I charge. Now let me follow that by saying that for what I do for clients in my hosting ($20/month billed annually) I’m the least expensive in the industry. I’ve been handling the hosting for my clients since 1997. I originally used the hosting they had, though dealing with multiple hosting companies I found working through many hosting company’s different interfaces to be a big pain. I decided since I can make money and at the same time using the same interface everyday, this make it easier to provide the best service, it would be a win-win for both my clients and myself. And it has been. Though with this client being very price conscious, they decided my price was not  what was preferred. I gave them about a dozen of competitors, showing those prices being MUCH more than mine. The client still chose to go with GoDaddy.

So this was my first migration from my server to GoDaddy and felt sharing this info, coming from a veteran since 1994 of he Internet industry, at least since 2007, doing so on WordPress, some would find value in this.

Let me also point out that GoDaddy, in my professional opinion, have an inferior infrastructure. At least with their software.  Hardware too probably, though I’m mostly familiar with their software. The server software tools are bastardized. For example they have a cPanel. Though like all software they use they buy a license, then change it to work on their server. Their cPanel is NOT compatible with the standard cPanel. When you run WordPress on their server, there are some plugins they do not allow. Now this part about banning some plugins is not necessarily a bad thing, as there are some plugins that aren’t really good. Though there are some that are fine for most other hosting servers. Because of their bastardized system, they mess up the system. Something I found out that I had no idea about is that this ‘Managed WordPress’ hosting they have does not use even THEIR cPanel. I generally, in my hosting, use the cpanel file manager to upload files. For instance that’s how I upload the WordPress install from WordPress.org. Can’t really do that here. One has to use SFTP and they recommend using FileZilla. That’s ok, though I stopped using FTP years ago, so another step which slowed down my progress.

Now keep in mind, GoDaddy changes things all the time. A year or so ago they had WordPress managed hosting. Then they stopped. Then they started again, though charging a base price, then $10-ish dollars, maybe more per installed plugin. Now they’re running a special, which sounds very good, though has kinks. In actually ALL their services have kinks in my professional opinion.

So the next thing I neeeded to do, as I do for all my client’s sites is connect their Google account with their WordPress website. The way Google prefers to do with a GoDaddy hosted site is to have you enter the user name, or account number and password to connecting with their hosting account. Well Google didn’t see the valid access (Had used it a number of times in setting it up) as valid. That could have been because it was less than a day of the account being active. So used the HTML file upload method.  Not the worse, though why didn’t it see the GoDaddy login as valid.

From there, went in and removed a couple plugins that GoDaddy doesn’t like. Not something I liked doing, though to make sure the site runs properly….

Again, the problem for me was having to spend so much more time, jumping through hoops, just to get it setup. I am anticipating more as I proceed, as I need to set it up with software the client wants implemented, forms and a few other plugins that I’m not sure what yet what other things I’m used to that the GoDaddy server doesn’t like.

That’s about it. Would love feedback and any questions on this. Hope you foetund this helpful.

Why Neil Patel?

Why Neil Patel?

Only in the last few months have I become aware of Neil Patel , http://neilpatel.com and his teachings to help boost your online presence. I can tell you that having been in the business since 1994 both for a number of companies and on my own, that his teachings are totally valid and very valuable. Some of what he teaches I knew already, though a lot I did not. In many ways for me, he’s helped fill in some gaps. Something I’ve immediately learned is consistency, one of my biggest challenges. At times when I’ve had projects that needed to be completed, I’d lose my consistency. That’s part of my Why for Why Neil Patel?

One of the other important things, I knew, though wasn’t sure how important it is, building your email list. One of the ways of doing that is to offer something for free to get an email list. I had offered discounts, though giving something away is much more powerful. Building an email list is about THE most important thinks to do. In everything you do, you must learn about doing whatever you need to make your content as viral as you can. In asking for email addresses, page content, blog content etc. Viral can be in wording, images, video and more. In his teachings he provides more info on that. The point is the more viral you can be, the faster you can grow. What is “Viral”? That content that is shared… a lot! The more heavily it is shared, the better your results.

Neil provides a number of tools (websites) to use to help make your Internet marketing more powerful. Most are free. Though I’d been using Google for my clients websites. There are tools there I didn’t even realize were there.

You absolutely owe it to yourself and your business to get plugged into as much as you can with Neil.

SEO for your Godaddy, Wix or Weebly Website

SEO for your Godaddy, Wix or Weebly Website

SEO aka Search Engine Optimization is a number of techniques used to get your site ranked on Google. The desire for everyone is to get ranked on the first page of Google. Some say it takes months or weeks, though there is a method to help move it along faster. A shortcut if you will. This is good for any website, not only with the platforms of GoDaddy  (using their Website Builder),

Wix or Weebly. These are mentioned first because they are the most notorious for not being able to get indexed.
This shortcut is implemented using YouTube Live. YouTube Live is a method where a video is created (can be a very simple video), then streamed on YouTube. The advantage of this method is that the video comes up immediately, in a few minutes or can take a little longer, though usually within 24 hours, on the First Page of Google using keywords most appropriate or popular for what your business offers.

Is Your WordPress Website Safe?

Is Your WordPress Website Safe?

It came to my attention recently from an insider at a hosting company that many webmasters do not keep their clients websites plugins or WordPress updated. Not only that, some also have multiple domains on one hosting account using the same cPanel. This is a very BAD practice. I’ve even seen some hosting companies promoting the idea. I found that very strange. See the problem is if you have several sites on the same account, using the same cpanel, that makes all the domains more vulnerable to attack. If one gets attacked, they all do by default. So if you aren’t sure of the answer to Is Your WordPress Website Safe? Read on.

Is-Your-Wordpress-Site-Safe-With these practices they also are not good about keeping their clients secure from hacking and they’re clients sites get hacked a lot.

Recently, I too have com across new clients who for whatever reason DO NOT feel it is necessary to back-up, protect an otherwise protect all their hard work and time invested to make sure it’s doesn’t all go POOF at some time just because others who have worked on their website never said anything. I’ve even sent articles to point out the importance of both of these issues and as intelligent as they are, for some reason, refuse to do this.

There are some that don’t realize why their website needs security. They don’t realize that websites get hacked for a number of reasons, not in search of financial information, they’re using server space, bandwidth and adding malware that allows them to network multiple websites they’ve hacked to do the same thing. I’ve seen sometimes the site replaced with porn. Many reasons to utilize the server space YOU’re paying for  that they are basically stealing from you.

In addition, I recommend to all you business owners, as one of the few web designers, SEO and WordPress website specialists who has been in the Internet industry since 1994, make sure you have admin access to your WordPress website(s). Not that you should touch anything though once you login you’ll be able to see if WordPress has any updates waiting or any plugins have not been updated.

Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Ideal Business Referrals

Ideal Business Referral CardIdeal Business Referral Sources.

In business networking, it’s always good to determine your “Ideal Referral Sources”. Some business who are Biz -to – Biz feel it’s every business. However though any business can be a client/customer, an Ideal Referral Source is one who not only does business, in addition their industry compliments yours in that they can refer their clients and customers to you, and you to them on a regular basis.
